Sarcodon atroviridis (Morgan) Banker syn. Hydnum atroviride Morgan Cap 2-8cm across, convex to concave with age; pale tan to fawn when young, then becoming black where bruised, entirely black when old, with greenish hues on drying; dry, felty, smooth or with a few pits and ridges. Spines on undersurface 5-15mm long; gray buff to deep brown with paler tips; brittle. Stem 50-80 x 5-l0mm, equal; buff, soon blackish like cap; smooth. Flesh firm; pale buff. Odor none. Taste bitter. Spores subglobose, 6-8.5 x 6-8.5µ. Deposit buffy brown. Habitat in mixed woods. Found in eastern and southeastern North America from Massachusetts to Florida. Season July-September. Edibility poor.
